Cherry Bekaert (CBH) covered the progress of the 2013 Improving Opportunities for Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business Act, in this article, which would transfer control of the Vets First Program from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to the Small Business Administration (SBA).
In the article, CBH states how the transfer could save the tax payers $5 million per year. Currently, the SBA determines eligibility for other small business set-aside programs, including the 8(a) and HUBZone programs. They also determine eligibility of SDVOSB status for most agencies but not the VA.
The article states “Obtaining service-disabled status provides veteran-owned businesses with significant contracting opportunities, as the VA annually awards over $3 billion in contracts to veteran-owned small businesses. Unlike SDVOSB set-asides from other federal agencies, disability status under the Vets First Program applies only to VA procurements.”
